Luke 1
What did I learn about Jesus?
- The people he works through make themselves available as servants.
What did I learn about disciple-making?
- Trust God to do the impossible!
Extended thoughts and observations from Pastor Mark:
Notice in verses 1 through 4 that this is a work of careful historical research. We believe that the Holy Spirit inspired the writing of the Bible but that doesn’t mean that Luke, and others, weren’t meticulous in recounting the greatest story ever told.
Zechariah versus Mary? Both of them had questions. Why was Zechariah punished for his…and Mary praised for hers? Perhaps it’s the difference in the questions. Zechariah’s question seems to be, “How can I believe such an incredible thing?” Mary’s is, “How will you do this impossible thing?”
Regardless, the great promise is found in verse 37: “…nothing is impossible with God.” And Mary’s GREAT statement of faith in verse 38: “I am the Lord’s servant… May it be to me as you have said.” May MY response to God’s call upon my life ALWAYS be, “I am your servant… do what you want to do… I will obey!”
One last thought. Verse 39-45 is one of the strongest pro-life Bible passages. John, while in his mother’s womb, leaps for joy at the presence of his Lord, Jesus… also in his mother’s womb!
